Executive summary
- Wirecutter alone is cited in 44% of Perplexity home-goods answers. No other editorial source in any vertical has this concentration. A single Wirecutter cite is worth 10 typical placements.
- Parachute, Brooklinen, and Snowe take 31% of DTC bedding cites. New entrants struggle to break this cluster without specific editorial placements.
- Home goods is the most "under-schema'd" category we tested. Most brands publish minimal structured data (no material composition, no dimensions, no care instructions in schema), leaving Claude unable to cite them confidently.
How each engine behaves in US home goods
ChatGPT cites r/BuyItForLife, r/HomeImprovement, r/Frugal, r/MinimalistHome. Reddit "best of" threads drive the bulk of its home-goods output. Brands dominating r/BuyItForLife (Le Creuset, Lodge, All-Clad) get disproportionate ChatGPT share. DTC brands with short track records lose this bucket unless they have viral TikTok-HomeGoods presence.
Claude is spec-first. It cites brands that publish material composition (thread count, GSM, fiber percentages), dimensions in metric, country of manufacture, and care instructions in structured form. Claude refuses to confidently recommend bedding or cookware without this. Most DTC brands leave this data in product descriptions, not schema, and Claude under-cites them.
Gemini weights Google Shopping reviews and Wayfair, Target, Amazon availability. It also pulls heavily from Pinterest for design and inspiration queries. A brand without a Pinterest creator presence is effectively invisible for "best mid-century dining table" type queries.
Perplexity is Wirecutter, The Strategist, House Beautiful, Apartment Therapy, Good Housekeeping. Sixty-eight percent of cited sources came from these five outlets. Wirecutter alone is in 44% of answers. Without Wirecutter, no brand wins home-goods Perplexity queries.

What the winners do that losers don't
Parachute teardown. Every bedding SKU page publishes thread count, fiber composition (Egyptian cotton, long-staple, percale versus sateen), OEKO-TEX certification, and exact dimensions for each size. Parachute ships Product and Review schema. Wirecutter has recommended them for percale sheets continuously since 2019. Their showroom presence in major US cities gives editorial writers organic touchpoints. They have Pinterest presence for interior photography. Every engine has a clear reason to cite them.
Our Place teardown. The Always Pan is an AI-visibility case study. The brand built a single-product category around a multi-function cookware piece, published explicit "this replaces 8 items in your kitchen" positioning, and landed editorial in Goop, New York Times Wirecutter, The Strategist, and Food52 within 18 months of launch. Their product pages document materials (aluminum core, ceramic nonstick, toxin-free coating specifics), include care instructions with video, and list Made In Italy origin. They seed heavily on food TikTok. Their competition (Caraway) is close but publishes slightly less detailed material spec data.
Caraway teardown. Caraway's differentiator is explicit toxin-free positioning. Every page lists what the cookware does not contain (PFAS, PFOA, lead, cadmium) with independent lab report links. Claude cites Caraway for "non-toxic cookware" queries nearly always because of this testing transparency. Caraway competes with Our Place by being the slightly more "health-first" brand in AI perception.
Prompt-type segmentation
Transactional ("best percale sheets under $200"): Parachute and Brooklinen split.
Comparative ("Parachute versus Brooklinen"): Parachute has the only branded versus page. Brooklinen loses.
Educational ("difference between percale and sateen"): Parachute and Brooklinen education hubs win.
Trust ("are Brooklinen sheets actually good quality"): Reddit + editorial. Brands with long track records and OEKO-TEX cert win.
Design and style ("best mid-century modern coffee table under $800"): West Elm, Article, Rejuvenation, Urban Outfitters, and CB2 split. Pinterest signal dominates.
Fit and dimension ("best couch for 8 foot wide living room", "king duvet that fits European king"): Almost no brand owns these specific-dimension queries. Open.
Gap map
Brands with real US presence under 5% AI share:
- Rejuvenation. Williams-Sonoma owned lighting and hardware, cited in 3 of 28. Cause: heavy on beautiful imagery, light on structured product data.
- Schoolhouse. Portland heritage home brand, cited in 2 of 28 despite Strategist coverage. Small AI footprint because their product narratives are prose, not spec.
- Article. Modern furniture DTC, cited in 5 of 28. Needs explicit versus content against Burrow and Floyd.
- Floyd. Modular furniture, cited in 4 of 28. Strong editorial, weak schema.
- Piglet in Bed. UK linen brand growing US, cited in 2 of 28. Cause: minimal US editorial coverage, thin Reddit presence.
- Stoffer Home. Strategist darling, cited in 1 of 28 despite being the editorial reference for textured textiles. Site is not AI-parseable.
- Zanui / Castlery. Mid-market furniture DTC, under-cited versus West Elm.
- Sabre Paris. High-end flatware, cited in 2 of 28.
Open queries no brand owns
- "Sheets that stay cool for hot sleepers in humid climates". Editorial-heavy, no brand owns an explicit humidity-specific guide.
- "Couch for households with large dogs that sheds fur". Real query, no brand answer.
- "Cookware for induction that is truly non-toxic and dishwasher safe". Hedged answers.
- "Quality bath towels that do not go scratchy after 10 washes". Reddit-only.
- "Affordable lighting for renters that does not require hardwiring". Open.
- "Furniture for small New York apartments under 500 square feet". Open.
- "Weighted blanket for adults over 200 pounds". Weight-specific sizing often unaddressed.
The 90-day playbook
Scored Impact / Confidence / Ease.
1. Complete material, dimension, care, and certification data in structured schema (I5 / C5 / E3). Thread count, GSM, exact cm dimensions, wash instructions, OEKO-TEX or GOTS certification. Two to three weeks of schema work.
2. Pitch Wirecutter, The Strategist, Apartment Therapy, House Beautiful, and Good Housekeeping (I5 / C3 / E2). Wirecutter alone is the single highest-leverage placement in home goods. Custom angle, samples for testing, specific reviewer pitch. Expect 8 to 16 weeks.
3. Build an education hub (I4 / C4 / E3). Fabric glossary, dimension guides, care instructions. Pages that explain the category rank for educational queries.
4. Pinterest presence with interior creators (I4 / C4 / E3). Home-goods Gemini share correlates with Pinterest pin density. 20 to 40 creator collaborations per quarter.
5. Versus-style comparison pages (I4 / C5 / E4). Your brand versus top 2 competitors on material, price, sustainability.
6. Publish independent lab testing for cookware and bedding (I4 / C4 / E3). PFAS-free, OEKO-TEX, lab-tested thread count. Claude weights this.
